Why Choose Handmade Children’s Clothing for Your Little Ones

When it comes to dressing your children, comfort, quality, and individuality matter more than ever. That’s why so many parents across the UK are turning to handmade clothing, and why I started Olivia’s Outfits in the first place.

I began sewing when my daughter Olivia was a baby. Like many new mums, I was navigating cloth nappies, sleepless nights, and endless outfit changes. But I quickly discovered that most shop-bought clothes just weren’t cut out for cloth bums. Compression leaks were constant, and sizing was never quite right. So while Olivia napped, I dusted off the sewing machine my granny had taught me to use years earlier, and that’s where it all began.

Today, Olivia’s Outfits is a small handmade clothing brand based in Dundee, Scotland, creating one-of-a-kind pieces for babies and children across the UK. Every item is made to order in my home studio using soft, high-quality fabrics that are kind to skin and made to last. Because everything is sewn in-house, I can offer flexible sizing to suit all little ones, whether they’re cloth nappy wearers or in-between sizes.

But handmade isn’t just about the fit. It’s about offering something different. In a world where high street shops still stick to pink frills for girls and dinosaurs for boys, I wanted to create a space where your child can wear whatever makes them happy. A digger dress? A unicorn romper? No problem.

By choosing handmade, you’re not just getting better quality clothing. You’re also supporting ethical, sustainable fashion. I use Oeko-Tex certified fabrics, source designs from UK-based artists, and focus on slow, considered production. That means fewer throwaway outfits and more pieces that can be passed down again and again.

Whether you're shopping locally in Scotland or elsewhere in the UK, handmade children’s clothing offers a unique, thoughtful alternative to mass-produced fast fashion. If you're outside the UK, I also take international orders through my Etsy shop. Just pop me a message to arrange a custom listing.
